Known to many as the unofficial mayor of his hometown of Ferndale, Scott Wagner tirelessly promoted dozens of boxing events in the ballroom of his family catering hall (Michael's Eighth Avenue) in Glen Burnie, Maryland. His Ballroom Boxing series produced some of the most memorable boxing action the state has ever seen. So many of the greats of the past and present have displayed their talents in the ring at Michael's while building strong resumes on their way to stardom.
With great love of his country, Scott hosted wounded veterans from Walter Reed Medical Center and brought them in by the bus load to enjoy an exciting night out sitting ringside at the fights. He would literally bring them into the ring to honor them prior to the main event with Paulie Whitlock's rendition of God Bless The U.S.A.
Simultaneously, Scott hosted a weekly radio program aptly titled The Ballroom Boxing Report with his good friend and boxing expert Scotty Crouse. Together, they covered everything from local to international boxing with a wit and flair like no others. Scott opened the doors of his studios to me to come in as a third wheel and occasional co-host. Much of those experiences, and the things I learned from Scott and Scotty became the impetus for this podcast. My mission at H Bomb Boxing is to show reverence to the memory of Scott Wagner with a show that is informative and entertaining without taking myself too seriously.
Outside of boxing, Scott was a caring family man with an outgoing personality and a one-of-a-kind sense of humor. With great ease, he could make you laugh or simply bring a smile to your face. He forged countless friendships with people from all walks of life and always treated everyone with kindness and respect. Simply put, he loved interacting with people.
Prior to his passing, Scott was informed that he was to be honored by the local boxing community for his hard work and dedication to the sport. In the spring of 2018, Scott Wagner was posthumously inducted into the Maryland Boxing Hall of Fame. No one was more deserving of this honor.
We miss you Scott. Hope you're listening.
